Cattle are big business in Alabama, and savvy cattlemen are making the most of their livestock by improving their marketing efforts.

The Alabama Cooperative Extension System works with cattle producers in the state to help them get the most dollars for their product and to market cattle more effectively. They offer help with sales, marketing, vaccination schedules, record-keeping and risk-management strategies.

“We work with a lot of people who may not know how to get started,” said Josh Elmore, regional Extension agent for animal science and forages. “Extension works with producers to educate them on the steps to get to an advanced level of commercial cattle marketing.”

Recently, the annual Producers Feeder Calf sale grossed almost $3.5 million. The sale was a merger between the Producers Feeder Calf Sale and the Alabama Feeder Cattle Marketing Association. This year marks the 34th anniversary of the sale, which has grown exponentially over the years.
